About the Role

The Programs Manager nurtures Terra Firma’s mission by designing and leading programs that grow community through connection and joyful effort. This role ensures that classes and instructional experiences are inclusive, progression-based, and inspiring—helping members feel supported in their growth while strengthening retention and belonging across the Terra Firma community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Class & Program Management – Oversee climbing classes, clinics, and fitness offerings to ensure quality, safety, and consistency.

  • Instructor Oversight – Hire, schedule, and train instructors; provide feedback and performance evaluations.

  • Program Development – Create and refine new classes (intro, progression, specialty clinics, workshops, youth/adult programs).

  • Quality & Curriculum Control – Standardize curriculum and teaching methods across staff.

  • Community Integration – Collaborate with Marketing and Community Engagement to promote programs and drive participation.

  • Data & Feedback – Track attendance, fill rates, and member feedback to continually improve offerings.

Success Looks Like

  • Classes are consistently well-attended and highly rated by participants.

  • Instructors feel supported, trained, and motivated.

  • New programs launch successfully and reflect Terra Firma’s values.

  • Programs actively support member retention and community growth.

  • Program fill rates and revenue targets are met or exceeded.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Program or Class Management – Prior experience developing, coordinating, or managing fitness, recreation, or instructional programs (climbing-specific preferred).

  • Strong Leadership & Coaching Skills – Ability to hire, train, and support instructors, while fostering a positive, growth-oriented team environment.

  • Customer Service & Community Building – Demonstrated ability to create welcoming, inclusive experiences that build connection and support member retention.

  • Organizational & Data-Tracking Abilities – Skilled at managing schedules, tracking program metrics (attendance, revenue, feedback), and refining offerings based on results.

  • Knowledge of Climbing, Fitness & Safety Standards – Solid understanding of climbing techniques, fitness/yoga instruction, and safety protocols to ensure high-quality, consistent programming.

  • Ability to Instruct Climbing Classes – Confident in leading introductory and progression-based climbing classes to ensure program continuity when instructors are unavailable.

  • Energetic, adaptable, and able to work evenings/weekends when classes occur.

  • Passion for climbing, fitness, or outdoor recreation (preferred but not required).

  • Reliable Transportation: Traveling to Events Required (May require travel to East Lansing in 2026)

Compensation & Benefits

Part-Time, Hourly: $18-$21/hr DOE, 10-20 hours a week
Potential for full-time

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Gym Director/Manager

Works closely with: Instructor Team, Front Desk Manager, Head Route Setter (for comps/events), Community Engagement Coordinator

Does not own: marketing campaigns, photography, or brand messaging
